## What Are Soil Amendments?

Soil amendments are applied to improve soil performance, increase water absorption to allow vegetation to develop a desirable deep and healthy root system, and mycorrhizal network development (fungi to plant root communication).

## Improving Existing Soils

For long-term vegetation health it is imperative to test the site’s soil for infiltration and soil nutrients. Depending on the type of soil and level of compaction, it may not be able to infiltrate stormwater at the desired rate for healthy deep–rooted vegetation. Compacted or nutrient depleted soil may also deprive native landscaping of necessary nutrients.

Partnering with a company specializing in Green Infrastructure ensures that we quantify any soil deficiencies and introduce the most effective materials to enhance natural plant life. Our goal is to provide long term sustainability when implementing GI, and we provide the design, development, and maintenance to keep your systems compliant and functional.

### Adding Organic Soil Material

Whether your desire is a standard turf lawn, or low-maintenance native vegetation, implementing healthy vegetation relies on having soil that supports healthy plant life. Compacted soils often inhibit native plants and grasses from developing deep roots that allow for greater stormwater infiltration. Heavily compacted soils can act like an impervious surface, increasing stormwater surface runoff and the spread of contaminants and pollutants. Soil amendments incorporate organic materials, including compost, to change the soil’s physical and chemical properties for improved filtration. For compacted soils that contain sufficient organic content, tilling and supplemental sand are effective soil amendments to aerate soil and increase infiltration.

## Uses for Soil Amendments

Compacted soils are often lacking in necessary nutrients and organic matter as the natural process for healthy soils to develop is often interrupted due to construction. Projects that have excavation, grading, paving, and other development activities interrupt the soil’s natural structure and chemistry. These activities can also result in construction debris contaminating the soil.

									Soil amendments are suitable for:

- New Construction/Development
- Retrofits in Urban Areas
- Detention Basin Design & Retrofit
- Turf Lawns
