Why does stormwater management vary so much?
The federal government established the Environmental Protection Agency to create laws for the betterment of human health across the country. The EPA established minimum criteria for stormwater treatment, especially on construction sites. The agency shared responsibility of regulating and enforcing stormwater treatment to the state level, which oftentimes is pushed down to the county and municipal levels. This has resulted in various levels of treatment expectations across the country. AQUALIS has relationships with regulators nationwide, enabling AQUALIS to effectively advocate on behalf of our customer, proactively addressing any identified or potential issues. For more information about regulations specific to your locality, visit our State and Local Compliance Pages.
What is stormwater management?
During storms, rain events and snowmelt, runoff flows onto vegetation and into natural ground where the water can be absorbed. In developed areas, stormwater falls on impervious or hard surfaces that prevent the natural infiltration process, resulting in stormwater runoff. To combat this, stormwater systems are put into place on developed properties to combat flooding and pollution to freshwater ecosystems.
Is stormwater management required?
Managing stormwater is the responsibility of each property owner. The Federal Government has national standards for stormwater quality and preventing pollutant discharges. These regulations are enforced on the state and local levels. To learn more about what the local regulations are in your area, visit our State and Local Compliance Pages.
How do I get started managing stormwater on my property?
To understand how to best manage stormwater on your property, the first step is understanding what infrastructure already exits. This is done by performing a stormwater inspection of the property. An AQUALIS stormwater professional will consult the original design plan for your property to understand what assets you have and ensure they are functioning properly.
How is stormwater managed?
Stormwater is managed by devices called stormwater control measures (SCMs). Stormwater control measures (SCM) — sometimes referred to as stormwater best management practices (BMP) collect, store and treat stormwater. Stormwater assets must be maintained and occasionally repaired to ensure compliance and functionality.
